One Rack for Many Bikes: How Shingleback’s Cradle Accessories Future-Proof Family Riding

Shingleback Rack carrying BMX

Families don’t ride one type of bike forever. Kids grow, bikes change, and new riding styles come along. That’s why the Shingleback vertical bike rack is built as a modular system, designed to adapt over time rather than be replaced.

At the heart of the system is Shingleback’s patented wheel cradle, which supports bikes by the wheels — not the frame or rims — protecting your bikes while accommodating tyres up to 4″ wide. What truly sets the rack apart is hoits custom accessories integrate with the cradle and lower bar to handle everything from kids’ BMX bikes to road, gravel and mountain bikes.

Roadie Inserts: Confidence for Road & Gravel Bikes

The Roadie Insert adapts the cradle to securely hold 700c road and gravel wheels. Slimmer tyres sit safely in the cradle and are held in place using Shingleback’s bungee system, without rim contact — ideal for carbon and lightweight wheels.

For families carrying multiple drop-bar bikes, Roadie Cradle Tilt Brackets angle the cradles slightly to prevent handlebar interference, making loading easier and reducing bike-to-bike contact.

BMX Inserts: Designed for Smaller Wheels

Smaller wheels need a different approach. The BMX Insert allows 20″ wheels — common

on kids’ bikes and BMX setups — to sit correctly in the cradle. A cam-buckle strap replaces the bungee to provide a secure hold where smaller wheels need extra tension.

As kids grow or bikes change, the insert can be adjusted rather than replaced, extending the life of the rack.

Compatibility Note:

Bikes fitted with Manitou (Minotaur) forks in 20″ and 24″ wheel sizes are not compatible with the Shingleback rack system due to the fork and dropout design.

Pro Tip: The Extender Is Useful for Road Bikes Too

The Extender mounts to the bottom bar, not the cradle, and while it’s often paired with the BMX Insert, it’s also useful for road bikes. When carrying road setups, the rear wheel can rest neatly against the Extender, helping the bike sit consistently and load cleanly — particularly when mixing different bike styles on the rack.

Built to Grow With Your Family

With Shingleback’s accessory ecosystem, one rack can comfortably carry:

  • Kids’ BMX and small-wheel bikes
    Road and gravel bikes
Mountain bikes with tyres up to 4″ wide

By adapting the rack to the bike, not the other way around, Shingleback delivers a genuinely future-proof solution — one that evolves with your family’s riding for years to come.
